This is some of the copy I wrote for the SABC documentary, ‘Looking In, Looking Out: Journey to the Source’ on the Hare Krishna International Headquarters in Sridhama Mayapur:

Mayapur is the spiritual heartland of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).  Mayapur is situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges in West Bengal, India.  It is the birthplace of Lord Caitanya whom Vaishnavas worship as Lord Krishna or God Himself.

Lord Caitanya descended from the Spiritual World just over 500 years ago.  ISKCON’s founder-acarya, Srila Prabhupada, wanted ISKCON Mayapur to be an international centre for learning, spiritual understanding and the practice of Krishna Consciousness or Devotional Service.

Srila Prabhupada bought the Mayapur land in 1972.  He laid the cornerstone of “The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium” in 1977.  This Temple will be a shining beacon of light in this dark, materialistic age known as Kali Yuga.

Srila Prabhupada realized Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s prediction that people from diverse cultures from all over the world will come together and chant the Holy Names of Krishna in Mayapur.  The chanting of the Holy Names of Krishna is the recommended process of self-realization for the modern age.
