St. Theresa of Avila, the accomplished 16th Century Carmelite nun, wrote a profound spiritual narrative called The Interior Castle. The Interior Castle is considered her masterpiece and was written when she was 62. The work is a synthesis of her finest teachings, seeing her progress to the ‘Seventh Mansion’ or pinnacle of her spiritual achievement.

‘God espouses souls spiritually…even thought the comparison may be a coarse one I cannot find another that would better explain what I mean than the sacrament of marriage. This spiritual espousal is different in kind from marriage, for in these matters that we are dealing with there is never anything that is not spiritual. Corporal things are far distant from them, and the spiritual joys the Lord gives when compared with the delights married people must experience are a thousand leagues distant’ (IC 5.4.3)
